Mohastangar
Tour Details
Mahasthangarh is one of Bangladesh's most historically significant and oldest urban archaeological sites, located about 13 km north of Bogra town on the bank of the Karatoya River. Dating back at least to the 3rd century BCE, it was the ancient capital of Pundravardhana, known as Pundranagara or Paundravardhanapura, a flourishing city under various dynasties including the Mauryas, Guptas, Palas, and Senas. The name "Mahasthan" signifies a place of great sanctity, and "garh" means fort, reflecting its fortified nature and spiritual importance over millennia. Archaeological excavations have revealed layers of continuous habitation from the pre-Mauryan period to the Muslim era, unearthing remnants of fortifications, religious structures (Buddhist monasteries, Hindu temples, and later, mosques), coins, terracotta plaques, sculptures, and inscriptions, including a significant Brahmi script from the 3rd century BCE that hints at Mauryan imperial patronage. Beyond the central citadel, numerous mounds and isolated sites like Govinda Bhita, Bairagir Bhita, and Gokul Medh (popularly associated with the legend of Behula and Lakhindar) further illustrate the region's rich cultural tapestry. Mahasthangarh remains a crucial site for understanding the ancient history and cultural evolution of Bengal, attracting both historians and tourists eager to explore its storied past.
